Scarecrow Weekend and May Day in Slingsby

The Scarecrow weekend and Slingsby May Day celebrations will be taking place over the weekend of 4th to 6th May. Friends of Slingsby School (FOSS) warmly welcome entries for the scarecrow trail from village residents. There is no set theme, we just ask for a fun, child-friendly entry that families will be able to guess using a clue from the trail. Entries are £2, please submit the name of your chosen scarecrow along with a clue by Monday the 15th April. To enter or for more information please email [email protected] , click on one of the links below to download an entry form or look out for entry forms in the upcoming issue of the Triangle.

The pop-up cafe will be open in the Methodist Chapel across the whole weekend 10am – 4pm, offering trails, refreshments and a selection of children’s pre-loved books and games.

Bank holiday Monday will start with the village car boot sale on the sports field where parking will also be available for the day. On the green there will be live music, maypole dancing, singing and stalls organised by the Slingsby Maypole committee. The scarecrow trail will feature across the whole weekend with trails available from the pop-up cafe in the Chapel and Slingsby Sports Club.

Slingsby in the Iron Age – Talk by Prof Mel Giles

Tuesday 19th March, 7.30pm, Talk on Iron Age Slingsby in Methodist School Room

In this lecture, Professor Melanie Giles will explain the significance of Slingsby’s Iron Age ‘barrow cemetery’. Building on last year’s lecture by Bruce Harrison on the Mesolithic and Neolithic evidence from the rich evidence of flint finds, Mel will reflect on the evidence from antiquarian, aerial and archaeological discoveries to explain why Slingsby might offer a unique insight into Ryedale’s Iron Age past, setting the scene for Professor Dominic Powlesland to share his latest thoughts on Roman Ryedale in the light of excavations at Hovingham’s Roman villa in April.
