Castle Howard Flower Festival

Castle Howard Flower Festival – Thursday 28th June to Sunday 1st July

The festival now in its fifth year, will see spectacular floral displays that will transform Castle Howard’s grand interiors into an English Country Garden.

This year’s festival will see a new direction as we welcome a new creative team led by Fiona Pickles – with a mission to bring the wild outdoors inside the House. Fiona is recognised as one of the leading floral designers in the UK. Featured globally, she has appeared in British Vogue and was listed by The Telegraph as one of the Top 20 creative florists in the country. Fiona is a leading advocate for British flowers and was among some of the first florists to embrace this rapidly burgeoning side of floristry.

Her work is inspired by the seasons and everything she does is led by what is available naturally, she is well known for seeing the beauty in the most ‘ordinary’ of things. Creating pieces of floral art, she uses flowers that are lovingly grown, tended and picked or foraged locally, as well as sourcing seasonal products from local growers. Working in partnership with Castle Howard Gardens team this year’s festival will appeal to those with a love of nature and natural gardens. The designs around the House will be driven by the flowers and foliage available around the Castle Howard Estate this year – large installations inspired by the landscape, combining dramatic impact with wild, untamed beauty.
Alongside the installations in the House, the festival will include a series of talks, demonstrations and workshops from local professional growers and arrangers, with a focus on English grown flowers and tips to grow your own cutting garden.

The Flower Festival is included within standard admission.

Talk: Slingsby Castle – Landscape and Settlement, 19 June

Tuesday 19 June 2018, 7pm, Slingsby Village Hall.

A lecture by Steve Moorhouse: Landscape and settlement around Slingsby Castle in the medieval period and beyond.
Slingsby castle on first appearance looks like a ruin of a large 17th century country house; which it is. However, what is less obvious is that it sits on the original ramparts and basement structure of a medieval castle developed from the 13th Century onwards by the influential Hastings Family into a substantial castle with defences and an entrance gatehouse. It was all ready for action in the Wars of the Roses.
Its impact on a small medieval village and the land around it would have been considerable. What did that landscape look like and where were the vital buildings which supported it?
Steve Moorhouse is visiting lecturer at Leeds University and an archaeologist with an expertise in early landscapes and early forms of settlement that have disappeared. His particular interest is the medieval period, but he has also has considerable experience in the interpretation of the landscape.

Entrance: £3.

NB. There has been a change to the July programme – instead of the 17 July talk, there will be a visit to Shandy Hall on 18 July – more here

Land South of Aspen Way – See the proposals – Consultation ongoing

Field south of Aspen Way

On Monday 4th June, Savills (UK) Ltd undertook a consultation exercise on the behalf of Castle Howard Estate to discuss with the community a potential development at Land to the South of Aspen Way, Slingsby. An outline planning application is currently being prepared for the erection of up to 38 dwellings on the land. Savills advise us that all matters have been reserved for later determination, save for access. The application is being prepared in line with the emerging allocation of the site for residential development by Ryedale Council.

Those who were able to attend on the day may already have completed a Feedback form on the proposals. This initial consultation will end on Monday 18th June.

Comments can either be posted to Lucy Stephenson, Savills, Ground Floor, City Point, 29 King Street, Leeds, LS1 2HL or emailed to her at this email address: [email protected]

[Note that the Feedback form simply asked if you Agreed/Disagreed/were unsure, and provided space for comments.]
