Victorian Funeral Bier

With the help of LEADER funding for Small Scale Heritage Enhancements and John Apps at JRA Woodworking we were able to restore the village bier in 2011. This has been on display in the church since 2012.

The Slingsby bier is a Victorian model of high quality design, very comfortably sprung. The use of village biers declined with cremation becoming more widespread and people no longer being taken straight from their home to their funeral service and burial. There are still a number of people in the village who will remember the bier being used in the 1950s and 60s.

The bier, which belongs to the Parish Council, is on display in the church, along with more information about its history
