REFUSE AND RECYCLING INFORMATION AND DATES 2023/2024

For all residents of the parish the garden waste collection is fortnightly on TUESDAYS (excluding December, January and February).

Subscription to the garden waste service for this year runs from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024. The new North Yorkshire unitary authority took over on 1 April 2023, when subscribers received a large label to replace the plastic tag.

Our nearest household waste recycling centres are in Malton (Showfield Lane) and Wombleton. There is also one at Thornton-le-Dale.

****************************************************************

Normally the waste and recycling collection day for Slingsby is Monday and for Fryton is Tuesday. (The calendar – link below – will show whether a given collection is waste or recycling.) Garden waste bins (for subscribers) are collected on Tuesday (excl December, January, February) immediately following the recycling collection.

Note that for South Holme the waste/recycling weeks are different.

If in doubt, we suggest you use the dedicated lookup page on the North Yorkshire website to find your property’s collection calendar: https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/bins-recycling-and-waste/check-your-bin-or-recycling-collection-day

Garden Waste Service

Since 1 June 2014 collections of garden waste have been a subscription only service. This change does not affect other waste collection services. Garden waste collections will continue to be suspended for the 3 winter months (December, January and February).

If you choose not to subscribe, then you must either take your garden waste to a Household Waste Recycling Centre or compost it at home. We recommend that you retain your brown bin in case you change your mind.

If you are not going to subscribe to the garden waste service, the brown bins remain the property of the Council and at some point in the future will be collected from your property with prior notice. However, if your brown bin is causing an obstruction and you would like it removed, please complete the online form to arrange for it to be collected.

Garden waste should not be placed in your general refuse bin.

If you choose to join the scheme, you will need to display a valid licence on your wheeled bin. A licence will be issued once payment has been received. The annual charge for the year commencing 1 April 2021 was held at £38.

Composting at home

With charges for the brown bin collection now in force you may want to think about increasing the amount of composting you do at home.
