Maypole dancing in Slingsby 6 May

Monday 6 May, 11am to 3pm, Slingsby Village Green and Village Hall

The preparations for Slingsby’s Mayday celebration are coming together nicely: dancers and musicians have been practising, scarecrows are being made (in secret), and the many stalls with crafts of all sorts are being made ready. Slingsby is proud to have one of the few remaining maypoles in Ryedale. It has survived the march of modernisation, but not without the odd mishap, as the timeline here shows: https://www.slingsbyvillage.co.uk/our-village/slingsby-maypole/

The Mayday programme looks like this:

  • 11.00 am         – Swinton Brass band
  • 12.00 noon      – Slingsby school children dancing round the maypole
  • 1.00 pm           – Minster Stray dancers
  • 1.30 pm           – Charity Brass Band
  • 2.00 pm           – Minster Stray dancers
  • 2.30 pm           – Charity Brass Band
  • 3.00 pm           – Raffle

There will be stalls all around the village green and in the village hall.  Refreshments in the Methodist school room. This year there are some fantastic raffle prizes. Full details in the leaflet below:

Throughout the weekend, the Slingsby Scarecrow Trail will be running. Deadline to enter a scarecrow – 9am Wednesday 1 May! Details on the village website HERE.
