Lighting up Slingsby – an update

Thank you SO much to everyone who has got in touch about Slingsby’s Advent windows. Please do feel free just to join in as and when you feel able.

Can we clarify that The Green definitely includes Green Crescent, so yes please to anyone who wants to be part of the first weekend’s displays (5-6 Dec). And also that the main road and The Balk/Balksyde  are also included in Cavendish Court, Sycamore Close and Aspen Way (2nd weekend).

Apologies if we have missed anyone. Please let us know if you need any ideas or help.

with huge thanks, Kate

Lighting up Christmas in Slingsby

Lighting up Christmas in Slingsby

Kate Giles writes: “2020 has been a difficult year for all of us and some great ideas have emerged about how we can bring a bit of light and joy to Slingsby this Christmas. All Saints Church and the Methodist Chapel are organising an Advent Calendar of windows around the village, with groups of windows opening up each weekend in December. The first group, on Church Lane, The Green (incl Green Crescent) and High Street will open on the 5th-6th, the second, in Cavendish Court, the Balk/Balksyde, Sycamore Close and Aspen Way, on the 12th-13th December and the third, on Railway Street, on the 19th/20th. We are still looking for some window makers on High Street, Cavendish Court, Sycamore close and Aspen Way – but if you’d like to join in from anywhere in the village and share a list of themes/ideas, please email Chrysa ([email protected]) or Kate ([email protected]).
No need to download a map…just take your weekend walk around these areas as soon as the light fades…
The final window on 24th December will be at All Saints Church, where we very much hope to be able to offer a slightly different but very special outdoor version of our ever-popular Candlelight Service at 4.15pm. Watch this space for more details!

The Village Hall Committee have suggested that everyone make a Star to hang on their gate or door. And we’re sure lots of households will also just be adding their own creative light displays and decorations to their windows and gardens during the festive season, so hopefully there will be lots to see over the festive season to cheer us up”.

We thank Kate and the other organisers. The Village Website has been working with Windows for over a decade now, so we are well-placed to bring you more on this theme in the coming weeks.

Christmas Sparkle in the Village

A message from Cynthia Fell, Village Hall Chair:

As everyone knows, 2020 has not been a year of celebration and Slingsby Village has not had the chance to spread its usual community spirit throughout the year.

We thought it would be nice if we could give the village a little more sparkle over the Christmas period than normal, by as many of our villagers as possible hanging a star on their door or gate or any type of Christmas decoration you would like to put out to show our community spirit is far from gone and just to let everyone know we are thinking of each other at this special time.

Watch this space for more, ambitious ideas to bring cheer during Advent.
