The Middleham Jewel – a talk by Dr Kate Giles

The Middleham Jewel – Image: York Museums Trust

Tuesday 18th April, 7.30pm, Slingsby Methodist Schoolroom. The Local History Group will meet for its April meeting and a lecture by Kate Giles on the Middleham Jewel.

This jewel was found in 1985 by a metal detectorist near Middleham Castle and the story of its discovery, analysis and interpretation was the subject of a lecture some years ago by Kate Giles, when you might remember a certain king was found in a car park!!

Kate is currently carrying out new research on the jewel with colleagues at the University of York and York Museums Trust, where it is displayed today. She has been involved in creating new exhibition content for Middleham Castle and would love to share some thoughts about the object and its North Yorkshire connections with you – perhaps leading to a group visit to Middleham and Jervaulx later in the Summer, if there is interest.

Meet as normal in Methodist Schoolroom at 7.30pm Tuesday 18th April.

After the lecture we will reflect on plans for Summer lectures and visits.

Guests always welcome.
