B1257 ROAD CLOSURE AT SLINGSBY

roadworks

According to a letter from Ringways Highways (the contractor for NYCC) which has been delivered to some households in Slingsby, the B1257 will be closed between Fryton Lane and the drive to Melgate from Monday 1 September 2014 from 7.30am until 4pm Monday to Friday.

It looks like we must expect delays, diversions and access difficulties. Vehicles must be clear of this stretch of road. We expect most traffic between Malton and Hovingham to be diverted via Coneysthorpe and Terrington.

However the good news is that Slingsby Village Website has spoken to NYCC and to the local Ringway contractor and we are assured that reasonable allowance will be made for local access and exit by residents. In particular, we will be able to cross the B1257 from The Balk to the Castle Howard road and vice versa. At times we ought to be able to exit the village along the B1257 directly to Malton or Hovingham, first checking with the team on site.

The full text of the letter appears below.

Can you ensure your vehicle is out of the working area during these times? Any special access needs can be discussed with the Ganger on site.

Footway access to all properties will be maintained at all times.

As with all works of this nature, there will be some inconvenience, but every effort will be made to keep it to a minimum.

2014 Bonfire plans cancelled

Some news from the Slingsby Sportsfield Committee:-

A decision has been taken by the Committee that runs Slingsby Sportsfield that there will NOT be a bonfire and firework display in the field this year.

The Committee has a long history of organising the event every 5th November and considerable effort, planning and money have been put in every year, taking responsibility for organisation, safety and clearing up the inevitable mess afterwards.

It was traditionally funded by donations from residents who have taken the opportunity to have rubbish collected and burned, and by voluntary contributions made on the night at the gate. The event has been run on an informal basis without charging entry and without taking out specific insurance for the night.

Donations have, however, been dwindling on the gate in recent years and contributions for having rubbish collected have all but dried up making it financially unviable to continue.

Chairman Dave Calvert explained ‘It is regrettable that we have had to take this decision as we know many people, particularly youngsters, always enjoy the event. However the Sports Club’s main purpose is to provide and maintain the sports facilities. It would be wrong to continue to subsidise a one day event that the people who attend, many of whom come from outside the village, do not support financially. We cannot contemplate charging at the gate as that would make the event ‘official’ and require us to take out insurance for the night at a cost that is totally prohibitive. We hope that residents respect this decision and help us by NOT putting any bonfire material in the field and making other arrangements for its disposal.

Photo of the Month: July 2014

Gary the barn Owl at Swinton Park hotel (near Masham). Photo by David Thornley

A owl portrait this month with David Thornley sending in this beautiful photo of a barn owl. David says in his email:-

Taken at Swinton Park hotel (near Masham) where they have a bird of prey centre, this is Gary the barn owl. I’m pleased with the photo as it’s very crisp and clearly shows the owl’s heart-shaped flat face, which allows the owl to exactly pinpoint the sound made by the mouse or whatever he fancies for lunch, even in the dark. If you’ve ever tried to catch a mouse in daylight, you’ll appreciate how hard it must be to catch one at night!

Gary is certainly very impressive but unlike the classic tawny owl hoot, barn owls have several calls including a very creepy screech.

Do you have a great photograph you’d like to share with us?

If you’d like to submit an image for the photo of the month slot, you can send it to [email protected]
