The Friends of Slingsby School would like to thank everyone that supported the recent Scarecrow Trail and Spring Fayre. The winning scarecrows were: 1st – Terrington Pre-School with Emergency Services; 2nd – Angie Reeves with Roadrunner; 3rd – Eloise Conyers with Gru and The Minnions. The winner of the prize draw was Alex Mitchell of Pocklington. The Friends of Slingsby School raised over £600 for their funds.
It is with some sadness and regret that after almost eight years the final meeting of the Slingsby, Southolme and Fryton Youth Club was held on 28th April 2011. All residue of funds and equipment have been put into the hands of Yorkshire Youth who in turn will distribute to needy local youth groups. The volunteers of the Youth Club would like to thank all villagers whether individuals or as part of a group who have supported the Youth Club both financially and otherwise over the years.
The Slingsby 2011 Scarecrow trail is taking place over this bank holiday period featuring Postman Pat and ‘the one and only’ ELVIS to mention just a couple.
Scarecrow Trail guides cost £1. The event this year will run over the Bank Holiday weekend of 30th April, 1st and 2nd May. So pop through to Slingsby to visit Elvis (before he flies back to Vegas) and his friends this bank holiday weekend.
Since nominations for our Parish Council do not exceed the vacancies, and since Robert Wainwright, our Ryedale District Councillor, is unopposed, Slingsby voters will have nobody to elect on 5 May. Therefore, we will be in a position to concentrate on the arguably more important issue of the voting system for parliamentary elections. We will be asked in the referendum if we wish to see the Alternative Vote (AV) system introduced in place of First Past the Post. AV seeks to ensure no one is elected without a broad base of support (normally a majority of the votes cast). It does this by asking voters to place candidates in order of preference. First Past the Post claims to ensure stable, majority governments, even though a majority of votes cast is not required to win.
