Planning Application for the Balk – Consultation extended

In our post of 11 March we suggested that anyone wishing to comment on this planning application should do so by 20 March.

At the request of the Parish Council, Ryedale DC have now extended the consultation to 28 March, which will enable the Parish Council to take into account public opinion and survey responses.

The Parish Council meeting on the 27th March will give an opportunity to discuss it in public and include any specific points that will be raised by anyone from the public in the meeting.

The eagle-eyed among you and those plugged into the grapevine will know that signs were posted in the village (at the top of the Balk) a week or so ago, announcing that Castle Howard had submitted the long-awaited application. It is a Reserved Matters application, meaning it addresses those areas which were not covered by the outline approval of March 2020.

Much of the information in this application is what Castle Howard presented to the village at the open meeting in the Village Hall on 28 November 2022. But there is additional information, most interestingly around the phasing of the project and the confirmation that only part of the site (the larger Castle Howard owned field) is up for permission at this point. Another application for the other smaller part may follow soon.

The Parish Council are a statutory consultee and aim to meet in the coming week to determine their response to the application. We hope to bring you more on that, once the meeting has been held.

If you wish to comment on this application, we recommend you do so by 20th March. You may comment online on the Planning portal (link below) or by emailing [email protected]

The full Reserved Matters application can be found on the Ryedale District Council Planning portal here:

Some will remember that this site was adopted into the Ryedale Plan in 2017 and the first consultation was held in 2018 as reported in this village website POST of June 2018.

Slingsby Sports and Social Club – Slingsby Sport for All Project (and 24 hour darts marathon!)

Slingsby Sports Field has been a centre of community activities since at least the 1920’s and over the years the facilities have been improved to meet the changing needs of our community.  The Sports and Social Club is used extensively by many members of the community, including being the sportsfield for children attending Slingsby School.  However, the current facilities, which were built in the 1980’s and have served the community well, are in need of significant development.

The vision is to transform the facilities available to all parts of our community, including people of all ages and backgrounds who use the club for either sports, play or socially, especially those who may have mobility issues.

The project will achieve this in 5 areas.

  • Activity 1 – Extension to the Sports Club to improve access for people with disabilities and improving the changing rooms and shower facilities
  • Activity 2 – Improvement to sporting facilities and coaching resources
  • Activity 3 – Improvement to catering facilities
  • Activity 4 – Improved outdoor seating for families and disabled visitors
  • Activity 5 – Environmentally sustainable renewable energy system

In order to raise money for this project The Sports and Social Club are running a wide range of fundraising activities, including:

  • A 24 hour darts marathon running from 9am on Saturday 11th March to 9am on Sunday 12th March which they are hoping will set the world record for the most points scored by a team in 24 hours on a Yorkshire (doubles) dart board.  If anybody would like to take part, either as a player, helper or supporter they would be more than welcome.  Just get in touch with Paul Hogarth to find out more by emailing [email protected] or phoning 01653 628219.
  • A Crowdfunding page that has a wide range of rewards available for people making donations, including some one off opportunities including a guided tour of the church with a view from the tower.  The link to the crowdfunding page is https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/slingsby-sport-for-all#start
  • A range of business sponsorship opportunities ranging from £50 to £500.  Excellent opportunities for businesses to support an fantastic cause whilst increasing the profile of their business.  Just get in touch with Paul Hogarth to find out more by emailing [email protected] or phoning 01653 628219.
