What Were the Romans Doing in Broughton?

In 1974 Raymond Hayes identified a scatter of Roman pottery in the corner of a farmer’s field at Broughton, near Malton. Thirty years later an investigation of the site was undertaken by volunteers guided by a professional archaeologist and over the course of eleven seasons of excavation the area revealed the uses of the site between the first century A.D. and the middle of the fourth century. Subsequent analysis yielded a wealth of further information about what people were doing there during this period.
This talk presents the results of the excavation showing what they can tell us about what the Romans were doing in Broughton. Some of the finds from the excavation will be on display.
