York’s History Through 100 Plaques’

York Civic Trust has been putting up plaques in York since 1946, and with the more recent change to the blue plaque format they have become more prominent.

Why do we put up plaques? Because we believe a place is a better place if the people who pass through it — residents, workers and visitors — understand how that place was formed and has changed through the years, giving a sense of belonging. York and its people have a wonderful story to tell.

In this talk we introduce you to many famous York people who have made their mark nationally in science, the arts, philanthropy and politics, and whose former homes or workplaces have a Civic Trust blue plaque to celebrate their achievements.
