Ryedale Festival swings into action

The Ryedale Festival gets under way this Friday morning with Sir Thomas Allen, no less, heading the cast in Bach’s comic and quirky Coffee Cantata in Pickering.

Many of the 51 events in this year’s Festival are now getting booked out, so here, from the Slingsby Village website’s very own Festival mole, is your insider’s guide to events where you can still snap up tickets:

Tuesday 21 July, 7pm, the Milton Rooms, Malton: the National Youth Jazz Orchestra playing big band classics and new compositions. Swing to the best young jazz musicians in the country!

Wednesday 22 July 8pm, St Mary’s Priory Church, Old Malton: Late, great string quartets by Haydn and Bartok. (Free pre-concert talk at 7pm). This concert includes two of the greatest of 20th century quartets, to complete what will be a unique cycle of the six Bartok masterworks.

Friday 24 July 11am, Joan of Arc Hall, Botton: Brass ensemble Aedelfrith, Northumbrian/Celtic inspired music from all ages (coffee before the concert).

Saturday 25 July 11am, St Hilda’s Church, Sherburn: Polyhymnia sing passionate gypsy-inspired vocal works (coffee before the concert).

Monday 27 July 3pm, St Mary’s Church Ebberston: Bach, including THE great Chaconne, played by Fenella Humphreys (violin).

Monday 27 July 8pm, St Martin-on-the-Hill, Scarborough: the Dunedin Consort play Bach, including all the famous violin concertos.

Friday 31 July 8pm, Duncombe Park Saloon: Michael Berkeley (of Radio 3 Private Passions) introduces favourite music, from Mozart to the present, including some of his own.

Saturday 1 August 11am, Choral music in St Mary’s Church, Thirsk. Includes the choral version of Samuel Barber’s famous Adagio (coffee before the concert)
