Winter services update

With the first cold snap of Autumn already upon us, it seems a good time to remind ourselves of the winter services (gritting etc) provided locally by councils and other agencies.

Ryedale District Council’s Winter Services Factsheet (October 2018) has just appeared and can be found on our Slingsby Village Website’s “Local Services Information” page HERE.

The Big November Leaf Clear

Can you spare an hour on Sat 17 Nov at 10am to help sweep them up?

The magnificent sycamore tree in All Saints Churchyard is one of the crowning glories of Slingsby village. Home to millions of bees and other insects and birds which enjoy it all year round. However, during November it drops tons of leaves on the paths which can lead to them becoming very slippery.

Refreshments will be provided.

Please bring a sweeping brush or rake and a pair of gardening gloves.

Planning for fracking? Public talk 11 October

Thursday 11 October, 8pm, Milton Rooms, Malton

Local residents will be interested to know that there will be a free public talk about the Government’s proposals to change planning rules with a view to easing the passage of fracking in our area and beyond. The key speakers include Kevin Hollinrake MP, the Rt Hon Nick Howard, Lyndsay Burr (one of our local councillors), and a representative of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England. We’ve just been advised that the newly appointed Government Commissioner for Shale Gas, Natascha Engel, will also join the panel. Kenelm Storey, the President of the Thirsk and Malton Conservative Party is to chair the event.

As we reported on the Slingsby Village website on 18 Sept [here], the controversial proposals are out for consultation The proposals have been welcomed by the shale gas industry. To make you views known, you must act before 25 October, when the consultation period ends.  For more background, see our earlier post HERE.

The event is free.

Slingsby Local History Group Meeting.

Tuesday 16th October.

Influential Slingsby Vicars. An update from Chris Churches and David Thornley on research they have done respectively on the Ward Family and Arthur Sinclair Brooke. The Ward family were about in the 18th century and owned Slingsby Hall. Chris has fascinating stories to tell about them, which also dispel some myths. Brooke was a very popular rector, who also wrote Slingsby and Slingsby Castle, accurately researched in the late Victorian period, but still very informative and relevant today. 7.30 p.m. Village Hall Committee Room.

Meetings are open to all. Unless otherwise stated, a minimum charge of £1 is made for each meeting to cover the cost, where necessary for room hire. If you wish to receive regular news of meetings by email, please sign-up to do so at any meeting.

Reminder: Next Saturday 13th October

Resonator Ukulele
