In 2009 and 2010, the Parish Council, under the Chairmanship of Chris Wilson and with guidance from Maggie Farey from Ryedale Voluntary Action, put in motion actions to produce a “village plan”.
A village questionnaire was circulated to all households in Fryton, South Holme and Slingsby, after which followed a series of meetings to look at the data produced. One of the facts that emerged was that half of the community were not online. From this, it was decided to progress with not only a web site but a newsletter as well. Various subcommittees were formed, coordinated by Pat Smurthwaite.
In mid-October 2010 the decision to go ahead was taken and the first edition appeared in December. By the next issue, the newsletter had been called ‘The Triangle’ in reference to the geographic locations of the three villages it covers – Slingsby, South Holme and Fryton. It is produced bi-monthly along with a separate ‘What’s ON’ pull out and, periodically a village “Yellow Pages”.
The first editor of The Triangle, Keith Buck, phoned Pat to see who the editor was; and at the end of the conversation found that he was! Keith was later joined by David Thornley who continues to edit the Triangle after Keith’s retirement from editing duties in 2015. The current co-editor Gill joined the team in 2018.
The extensive Triangle newsletter archive can also be accessed on this page – via the PDF download section below – which contains past editions of the newsletter going way back to issue one.
