Slingsby’s village green and its maypole will once again be the focus for our May Day celebrations.
There’ll be maypole dancing (of course), brass bands, the Minster strays, the scarecrow trail and much, much more.
We’ll bring you a bit more on the schedule as the big day approaches and more on the scarecrow trail very soon.
The Ryedale Festival’s Spring Launch Weekend took place on 15-17 March and with it the full programme for North Yorkshire’s leading summer music festival was published. We are now pleased to report that the Festival will be returning to Slingsby’s All Saints’ church on Monday 15 July, when pianist Jonathan Plowright will be playing Brahms. This concert will be preceded by a talk by BBC radio regular Katy Hamilton, exploring the public and private faces of Brahms.
The Spring Launch weekend featured BBC New Generation Artists and proved a big success.
The Aris String Quartet kicked off proceedings in Helmsley on Friday 15 March, with quartets by Haydn, Janacek and Dvorak.
On Saturday “Come and Sing with John Rutter” in St Peter’s Norton welcomed some 300 amateur singers from across Ryedale and beyond. By all accounts, they enjoyed the occasion immensely.
Saturday evening was jazz night. In the National Centre for Early Music in York, the Festival presented composer and bass player Misha Mullov-Abbado, with his talented group of young jazz names.
The weekend was brought to a close on Sunday afternoon with a piano recital by Mariam Batsashvili, a prodigiously talented young pianist from Georgia, who beguiled with her Haydn and Mozart and wowed with her Liszt, which rocked the Birdsall House ballroom with its power.

The Ryedale Festival’s Spring Weekend (set to launch the summer programme this Friday) continues on Saturday at the National Centre for Early Music with some modern, upbeat, melodious jazz.
The double-bassist and composer Misha Mullov-Abbado burst onto the scene in 2015 with a sensational debut album that prompted a stream of plaudits from international press and fans alike. As the son of the conductor Claudio Abbado and Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova, Misha has not only exceeded high expectations but established himself as a highly individual talent in his own right. Now a BBC New Generation Artist, he brings his unique sound and style to York, along with some of the top names in British jazz.

At the end of the concert, the full programme brochure for this year’s main summer festival (12-28 July) will be handed out to departing concert-goers.
There will be a pre-concert and interval bar in Helmsley Town Hall (first floor).

A talk by Dr Jim Leary, at the invitation of Slingsby Local History Group.
Dr Jim Leary from the Department of Archaeology, York University will give a talk on his work on Prehistoric Round Mounds, most famously Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, and most recently Skipsea in East Yorkshire; thought to be a medieval motte but possibly with earlier origins.
Jim has just joined the Department of Archaeology at York from the University of Reading. He previously worked for English Heritage.
The talk will be in the main hall – all are welcome!
