Ryedale Festival in Slingsby 18 July

Tamsin Waley-Cohen (violin)
Huw Watkins (piano)
Beethoven – Violin Sonata no. 8 in G major
Prokofiev – Violin Sonata no. 1 in F minor

Having played the ever popular Bruch G minor violin concerto with the Royal Northern Sinfonia in the Ryedale Festival’s Opening Gala in Hovingham Hall, Tamsin Waley-Cohen now brings something special to Slingsby this Wednesday morning.‘Nothing can equal this piece in beauty and depth’, said the great violinist David Oistrakh of the sonata that Prokofiev is thought to have composed as a memorial to his friends who were ‘disappeared’ in Soviet Russia. A dark-hued work, it contains passages intended to sound like wind in a graveyard and ‘make people jump out of their seats’, but also moments of profound beauty. Festival artist in residence Tamsin Waley-Cohen joins her longstanding duo partner Huw Watkins to perform it alongside a playful and good-humoured sonata by Beethoven which could hardly be more different.

Coffee, tea, soft drinks and biscuits served from 10am – 10.45am in Slingsby Village Hall.
