Talk: Slingsby Castle – Landscape and Settlement, 19 June

Tuesday 19 June 2018, 7pm, Slingsby Village Hall.

A lecture by Steve Moorhouse: Landscape and settlement around Slingsby Castle in the medieval period and beyond.
Slingsby castle on first appearance looks like a ruin of a large 17th century country house; which it is. However, what is less obvious is that it sits on the original ramparts and basement structure of a medieval castle developed from the 13th Century onwards by the influential Hastings Family into a substantial castle with defences and an entrance gatehouse. It was all ready for action in the Wars of the Roses.
Its impact on a small medieval village and the land around it would have been considerable. What did that landscape look like and where were the vital buildings which supported it?
Steve Moorhouse is visiting lecturer at Leeds University and an archaeologist with an expertise in early landscapes and early forms of settlement that have disappeared. His particular interest is the medieval period, but he has also has considerable experience in the interpretation of the landscape.

Entrance: £3.

NB. There has been a change to the July programme – instead of the 17 July talk, there will be a visit to Shandy Hall on 18 July – more here

Land South of Aspen Way – See the proposals – Consultation ongoing

Field south of Aspen Way

On Monday 4th June, Savills (UK) Ltd undertook a consultation exercise on the behalf of Castle Howard Estate to discuss with the community a potential development at Land to the South of Aspen Way, Slingsby. An outline planning application is currently being prepared for the erection of up to 38 dwellings on the land. Savills advise us that all matters have been reserved for later determination, save for access. The application is being prepared in line with the emerging allocation of the site for residential development by Ryedale Council.

Those who were able to attend on the day may already have completed a Feedback form on the proposals. This initial consultation will end on Monday 18th June.

Comments can either be posted to Lucy Stephenson, Savills, Ground Floor, City Point, 29 King Street, Leeds, LS1 2HL or emailed to her at this email address: [email protected]

[Note that the Feedback form simply asked if you Agreed/Disagreed/were unsure, and provided space for comments.]

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble

Sunday, 29th July, 2018.

Eager students, parents and local business owners star in our new promotional video showing potential Rumblers what is on offer when they complete the Ryedale Rumble Sportive on 29th July.

Described by previous participants as “almost a perfect Sportive with great scenery, friendly support, forebodingly steep climbs and fast descents”, the organisers hope that, with a choice of three routes – extreme, challenge and inspire – the event has something for everyone from the most experienced riders to those just starting out.

Event Director, Lizzie Coutts explains;

“As a school we feel privileged to be reviving one of the UK’s most popular cycling sportive. A superb physical challenge to riders of all abilities, on routes across stunning North Yorkshire countryside, whilst raising funds to help Ryedale’s future generation – it’s a winning combination!”

Sir Gary Verity of Welcome to Yorkshire has shown his support saying;

“It’s fantastic that the Ryedale Rumble is making its return and raising money for a great cause. Whatever your ability, the three routes will provide a stern yet highly rewarding challenge and they take place on some of our county’s most picturesque roads.”

“Cycling is booming across Yorkshire and I’d very much encourage people to give it a go.”

Anyone interested in participating should visit here for further details.
