Rosedale Local History Weekend 22nd/23rd April 2017

Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April from 11 am to 4.30 pm at Updale Reading Room, Rosedale YO18 8RQ. Rosedale Local History Weekend highlighting the “Land of Iron” project and Rosedale’s social history.

Archive photos, maps, plans and objects, local artwork and crafts, children’s activities, guided walks on both days and talks. Admission free.

Malton Museum lecture 19th April 2017

Friends of Malton Museum lecture on Wednesday 19th April 2017 at 7.30 pm in the Library, East Wing, Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton

Mark Sissons (archivist of the North York Moors Railway) will give a talk called “INDUSTRY AND THE WHITBY & PICKERING RAILWAY.

Admission is free to Friends, others are welcome at a charge of £3.

The Friends say:-

“The route of the Whitby & Pickering Railway is today seen as intensely rural. In the 19th century the Railway provided private railway sidings to serve many local industries. This talk looks at these local industries, from mines and quarries to blast furnaces, that sprang up along the route of the Railway.”

Gilling Miniature Railway – Passenger Days 2017

2017 train rides from Easter Sunday & Monday, and then on most Sundays from April 23rd until September 24th 2017,12:30 pm til 4:30 pm.

The Railway is at the Club House behind the Village Hall in Pottergate, Gilling East,YO62 4JJ. It is run by the Ryedale Society of Model Engineers, who say they make a nominal charge for a ride.

No rides on June 4th (driver training), May 7th & August 27th (mainline rallies) You can still come and watch at mainline rallies.

Refreshments offered most Sundays. Children’s playground.

Local History Group 18th April 2017

Local History Group meeting on Tuesday 18th April at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall committee room.

This is a working meeting about future projects, also to look at information about John Close (three times Lord Mayor of York and commemorated in the Church) and about Robert Johnson, the architect who rebuilt the Church in the 19th century.

Anyone interested in joining the LHG is welcome to come

(Future events include a guided tour of the Church on Saturday 6th May and a village walk to examine local flora on Saturday 3rd June, both events led by experts.)
