Another casualty of the current pandemic, the Ryedale Festival last week announced the cancellation of its summer festival, which was due to take place in the second half of July. A total of 60 events had been planned. This has been a huge disappointment to Festival supporters, musicians and other artists, contractors, promoters and all those who had worked so hard to develop the programme. The decision had become inevitable, the safety of all concerned being the paramount concern. Thoughts of course are with those directly affected by the pandemic.

For Slingsby, it means that we will be unable to welcome the Consone Quartet to play their planned programme of Beethoven string quartets in All Saints Church, which had been scheduled for 22nd July.

Venues across Ryedale, from grand stately homes to tiny village churches are now preparing to receive the 2019 Ryedale Festival.

The piano recital in Slingsby’s All Saints’ church (15 July) has now sold out, but there are many more events still available to choose from. Here’s just a short selection:

Sat 27 July, 5.30pm, Ampleforth College Performing Arts Centre (Yorkshire Young Musicians)

Sat 27 July, 7pm, Ampleforth College Theatre, Burying the Dead (a concert drama about Henry Purcell.

There are also major concerts at the University of York, Ampleforth Abbey and Scarborough which still have seats available.

The Ryedale Festival’s Spring Launch Weekend took place on 15-17 March and with it the full programme for North Yorkshire’s leading summer music festival was published.   We are now pleased to report that the Festival will be returning to Slingsby’s All Saints’ church on Monday 15 July, when pianist Jonathan Plowright will be playing Brahms. This concert will be preceded by a talk by BBC radio regular Katy Hamilton, exploring the public and private faces of Brahms.

The Spring Launch weekend featured BBC New Generation Artists and proved a big success.

The Aris String Quartet kicked off proceedings in Helmsley on Friday 15 March, with quartets by Haydn, Janacek and Dvorak.

On Saturday “Come and Sing with John Rutter” in St Peter’s Norton welcomed some 300 amateur singers from across Ryedale and beyond. By all accounts, they enjoyed the occasion immensely.

Saturday evening was jazz night. In the National Centre for Early Music in York, the Festival presented composer and bass player Misha Mullov-Abbado, with his talented group of young jazz names.

The weekend was brought to a close on Sunday afternoon with a piano recital by Mariam Batsashvili, a prodigiously talented young pianist from Georgia, who beguiled with her Haydn and Mozart and wowed with her Liszt, which rocked the Birdsall House ballroom with its power.
