FRIDAY 5th – SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER, Castle Howard

Fantastic Food Festivals will be making their first visit to Castle Howard, to work their magic and create the ultimate food and drink festival for all the family to enjoy.

John Hoy, CEO of Castle Howard says: ”We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to our Fantastic Food Festival in Castle Howard’s tranquil and ornate gardens. Castle Howard certainly has all the ingredients to create the perfect festival – with a 1,000 acres of woodland walks, temples, lakes and fountains to explore with breathtaking views across an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”

Jeff Harper is the Director of Fantastic Food Festivals, he comments: “We’re delighted to organise a Fantastic Food Festival for the first time at this spectacular venue. We’re looking forward to celebrating local and regional food and drink at this beautiful historical venue; from artisan bread and pastries, mussels, homemade Ginger Beer, gourmet sausages, homemade pork pies and fudge to gin, prosecco and craft beers with plenty of sampling opportunities along the way.”

The Festival Kitchen and Talks and Tastings Hub is a hive of activity during each festival with a full programme of fascinating demonstrations from talented chefs as well as food and drink experts. Castle Howard will host Dean Edwards from ITV Lorraine, renowned local chefs Nigel Brown and Michelin-starred Andrew Pern from The Star in Yorkshire.
Prepare to be amazed by cake specialist and home economist Emma Fuller from Velvet Fig. During her live demo expect audience participation and tips on how to enhance your baking skills to create incredible statement cakes.

The youngest members of the family won’t be forgotten at the food festival. After sampling a wide selection sweet treats and a gourmet BBQ, children can run wild in the extensive grounds and adventure playground then enjoy the garden games and face painting.

FRACKING: GOVERNMENT CONSULTATION – IS LOCAL DEMOCRACY UNDER THREAT?

Earlier in the summer the Government launched a consultation on two controversial proposals relating to fracking. Both would have the effect of fast-tracking fracking in the UK.
The first proposal would allow shale-gas companies to drill exploratory wells without the need to apply for planning permission. This is called ‘permitted development’ and normally refers to small-scale, uncontroversial projects like conservatories and garden sheds. The proposal would therefore stretch this definition and prevent local planning authorities from examining and deciding on drilling plans by the fracking companies. Exploratory wells would proliferate.
The second proposal is to define fracking as ‘nationally significant infrastructure’ so it would go through a similar planning consent process to airports and power stations. This means that final decisions on fracking applications would be taken by the Government and not local planning authorities.
Many interpret this as an attempt by the Government to take control away from local planning authorities, who naturally have the best knowledge of local circumstances and local opinion. Projects could easily be approved despite strong local opposition.
Many bodies, including CPRE and the National Trust, oppose the Government’s proposals.
The leader of North Yorkshire County Council has written to the Government to express his serious concerns.
Ryedale District Council has just voted to oppose the Government proposals, as reported here: https://drillordrop.com/2018/09/06/ryedale-tories-reject-government-changes-to-fracking-planning-rules/

The consultation period runs until 25 October. If you wish to comment on the proposals, you could write to our MP, Kevin Hollinrake, at the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA, or by email at [email protected] . In addition, you could also write to the Secretary of State, Greg Clark, at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, 1 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0ET, or by email at [email protected] .

Ryedale Festival in Slingsby 18 July

Wednesday 18 July, 11am, All Saints’ Church, Slingsby

Tamsin Waley-Cohen (violin)
Huw Watkins (piano)
Beethoven – Violin Sonata no. 8 in G major
Prokofiev – Violin Sonata no. 1 in F minor

Having played the ever popular Bruch G minor violin concerto with the Royal Northern Sinfonia in the Ryedale Festival’s Opening Gala in Hovingham Hall, Tamsin Waley-Cohen now brings something special to Slingsby this Wednesday morning.‘Nothing can equal this piece in beauty and depth’, said the great violinist David Oistrakh of the sonata that Prokofiev is thought to have composed as a memorial to his friends who were ‘disappeared’ in Soviet Russia. A dark-hued work, it contains passages intended to sound like wind in a graveyard and ‘make people jump out of their seats’, but also moments of profound beauty. Festival artist in residence Tamsin Waley-Cohen joins her longstanding duo partner Huw Watkins to perform it alongside a playful and good-humoured sonata by Beethoven which could hardly be more different.

Coffee, tea, soft drinks and biscuits served from 10am – 10.45am in Slingsby Village Hall.
Prices: Full £15.00, Gold £12.00, Silver £13.50, Under 25 £7.50.For full details of all Ryedale Festival events, and how to book, go to the Festival website: http://www.ryedalefestival.com/
Tickets may be bought from the Box Office on 01751 475777. Tickets should still be available at the door for the Slingsby concert.

The Great Gatsby at Castle Howard – Review

It’s not often you receive an invite to one of Jay Gatsby’s parties, so, when you get one, well, you don’t hesitate. We were greeted on the grand south steps by Rosie, a friend of Jay’s, and went into the house for a drink. Just as we were starting to relax and chat to some of the other guests, the action started up among us and we were drawn into it. The scene was set, then we were swept into the ballroom (Castle Howard’s Great Hall).
This is an immersive production presented by the Guild of Misrule, a group of talented young actors, dancers and singers.
We got to know a variety of interesting characters, fun-loving but all with their own particular flaws.
Among a strong cast, Amy Burns Walker stood out as Daisy Buchanan.
While staying in character, cast members taught us how to do the Charleston. From time to time we sang round a piano. We moved to various locations in the house in smaller groups for different aspects of the story. Sometimes individuals or small groups were discreetly asked to play a role.
On Wednesday’s first night, audience members arrived dressed in 20s style to complement the performance. Comfortable dancing shoes recommended!
The show continues until Sunday (Saturday has sold out). More information and how to book here: https://www.castlehoward.co.uk/DB/whats-on-view/the-great-Gatsby
