Why not take time to record your family memories of the River Rye during this festive season? If you, your family or friends have memories that link to the River Rye, please record them and send them in for the ‘Rye Reflections’ project. You can write them down, record audio with your smartphone or even video. Memories will be preserved for the future, inspire young people to care for nature, and will help create artworks based on the area. To find out more please contact Jen Hagan at [email protected] or telephone 07423062265.
“Rye Reflections” is part of the wider Ryevitalise project, which is supported by the North York Moors National Park Authority.
Here at the Slingsby Website and Newsletter Group we would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas, with hopes for a better and more prosperous 2021.
Community First Yorkshire are launching #DonateLocal; a campaign across North Yorkshire building on the popular ‘support’ and ‘buy’ local movements for economic recovery, directing the idea of supporting local to the benefit of charities and community groups.
This Christmas and beyond, they are encouraging people to donate to a local charity, be it through money, time or skills to give what they can, no matter how small, to help them keep going for the benefit of the people who need them.
Leah Swain, Chief Executive of Community First Yorkshire, says “2020 has been a hard year for many people, full of challenges, fears, worries and changes. However, amongst all this, camaraderie and community spirit have flourished, with people pulling together in their communities to help others and stay socially connected in any way they can. Charities and community groups have so often been at the heart of this, delivering key services and much needed help and support, all while facing their own barriers to survival. In our resilience survey conducted in September 2020, 3 in 10 charities said they would struggle to continue after March 2021 due to financial hardships caused by the pandemic. Now is our chance to give back to them”.
There are so many ways you could help. Perhaps by donating money to a local charity instead of sending Christmas cards, encouraging your employer to donate the cost of any cancelled Christmas party to a charity close to your heart or it could be by donating your time to take Covid-safe community action. Looking ahead to 2021 you may choose to donate your skills to become a trustee and help a charity thrive after surviving these tough times. No matter how small, any donation makes a big difference.
By keeping it local you are helping your own community; financially, emotionally and socially, and you will be able to see the direct impact of your actions.
