Some news about this year’s Hovingham Quarry Festival from the organisers:

‘Firstly a MASSIVE thank you to anyone who came to last year’s super chilled Quarry Fest, which was a great success with everyone enjoying the chilled atmosphere and funky bands.

This year we are opening at 6pm Friday 12th July due to demand from you guys, some folk want to be settled in Friday night, tents pitched & having a few beers. So for those of you heading over Friday night we are having a live set from our 1st ever Blue Grass band ‘Brothers of String’, who make those Banjo’s sing and get everyone dancing! And then a DJ set from Rob Hill rolls on until midnight.

Saturday 13th July’s line up of laid back & funky bands is gathering pace, and we are pleased to be opening at 11.00am this year with the 1st band on at 12.00. We are welcoming back ‘The Trucks’ (remember the monk on bass guitar!), and the ‘The Freewheel’ with their gorgeous melodies. New bands so far are ‘Brothers of String’ (Blue Grass), and ‘The Glass Caves’ (Up and coming Indie band from York). More bands to follow……

We tried hard to get it right last year and everyone had a fab time, so please do bring some friends along to show them what a great festival we have. We are not a corporate event, and are trying to supply great bands, food, beers, friendly atmosphere and a great site to host it in at fair prices. If you have any queries please do email – [email protected].’

More information about the bands and the event can be found on the website at http://quarryfestival.co.uk

Just a reminder that if you want to submit an entry for the famous Slingsby Annual Scarecrow Trail, the Friends of Slingsby School have asked that you submit an application no later than tomorrow Friday 19th April.

You don’t have to live in the village to join in the fun. The event takes place as usual over the Bank Holiday weekend (4th, 5th and 6th May).

For more information and an application form, follow this link to the relevant page of the Slingsby school website:

Play or umpire cricket at Slingsby Cricket Club

We are just into the Cricket season and a request has come into the website via Twitter regarding Cricket in the village.

If you, or anyone you know, would like to play or umpire cricket at Slingsby Cricket Club, then why not have a word with Wayne Fawcett on 07828 226556 or send a message to the website and we’ll forward it on.

Slingsby during the War

Back in December,  the first local history recording session, focussing on Slingsby during World War Two, took place at The Grapes Inn.

Last night, an edited version was ‘premièred’ at the Local History meeting and now you can have a listen to the recording too.

We’ve only scratched the surface regarding what was going on in Slingsby between 1939 and 1945. More recordings are being planned about the Slingsby’s War and other topics.

If you know of anyone who would like to listen to the recording but doesn’t have access to the internet, we would actively encourage people to download the audio mp3 file and burn it onto a CD.

There is a bit of background noise at the start of the conversation as teas/coffees are delivered but it quickly quietens down.

The Slingsby Maypole webpage

maypole raising in Slingsby 1905

Just over two years ago, the Slingsby village website launched with the aim of providing news and giving Slingsby, Fryton and South Holme an on-line presence.

The team went through the process of developing pages for the website and we thought we’d covered everything. We hadn’t. One iconic structure in the village was missing from the website – the Maypole.

Last week, a page dedicated to Slingsby’s Maypole went live on the website, just in time for the May Day celebrations due to happen in the village on May 6th. The page features a Maypole timeline and a brilliant YouTube video of the raising of the current Maypole dating back to May 1985.

The Maypole page can be found at: https://www.slingsbyvillage.co.uk/our-village/slingsby-maypole/
