Friends of Slingsby School – Scarecrow weekend 30th April to 2nd May 2016

The closing date for entering a scarecrow is Friday 22nd April. An entry form can be downloaded here.

F.O.S.S. writes

We ask families of all children in school, and other villagers, to make a scarecrow and display it in their garden from 12noon on Saturday, 30th April until 5pm on Monday, 2nd May.  You don’t need to be a fantastic artist/sculptor to join in – you just need a little imagination. We don’t have a theme, we don’t mind what they are made of – we just want you to have fun.

Who is your favourite movie/tv/sports star? Can you make him/her/it from shoe boxes, newspaper and bin liners? Perfect – you can join in! Don’t worry if you don’t live in the village as we have lots of places that can be used to display your scarecrow. Need some inspiration? Have a look at our Facebook page and see a photo of every scarecrow created in the last couple of years.

Scarecrow trails will be on sale from school, Tony’s Village Shop, Robin Hood Caravan Park and The Grapes Inn. Everyone that buys a trail is encouraged to submit a vote for their favourite scarecrow. The creator of the winning scarecrow receives a trophy and, as a thank you to those that have completed the trail, votes are put into a prize draw to win a cash prize.

As in previous years, FOSS will be providing refreshments/snacks and a tombola stall in the Reading Rooms on the Saturday and Sunday.

Ryedale Festival – three Easter concerts

1505274269-Kosmos w

1,2 & 3 April, Easingwold, Old Malton, Helmsley.

Like Easter this year, the Ryedale Festival has arrived early.

A series of three outstanding evening concerts gets under way on Friday 1st April 7.30 pm at the Galtres Centre, Easingwold, when the exciting ensemble Kosmos, firm favourites in Ryedale, make a welcome return to dazzle us with their musicianship and sense of style.

They play music  from  around  the  globe. Sophisticated jazz glides magically into wild folk fiddling, emotive Jewish music into hot-blooded tango, Arabic and Turkish improvisation into Greek melodies.

‘Revelatory…..their wild synthesis of tango arrangements, Jewish folk songs,  Leonard  Bernstein riffs and improvised takes on Vaughan Williams was an unexpected gift: brilliantly done with style and spunk’ –The Daily Telegraph.

2006907345-Retorica w

Saturday 2 April, 7.30 pm, St Mary’s Priory Church, Old Malton

Retorica play music for two violins by Bach, Mozart, Telemann, Prokofiev and more.

Retorica is formed by two superb violinists and communicators, who take their name from the feminine form of the Italian word meaning ‘artful persuasion.’

‘They are immensely communicative, both in spoken introductions and in their unfailingly musical playing, and their repertoire covers a huge range of styles. If people ever think music for two violins might be a bit dull, Retorica will totally change their minds!’ – John McCabe

This Easter concert series culminates with the Launch concert on Sunday 3 April in Helmsley, where Chris Glynn, Artistic Director, unveils the programme for the Ryedale summer Festival (15-31 July). This special event is now fully booked, but there are plenty of tickets still available for Kosmos and Retorica.

Key anti-fracking vote by Ryedale planners

split-field

Ryedale District Council’s Planning Committee met this evening (15 March) and voted overwhelmingly to recommend to North Yorkshire County Council that Third Energy’s application to frack at Kirby Misperton should be refused.

At a crowded meeting in Ryedale House, which followed a peaceful demonstration outside, councillors on all sides expressed their concerns about the application.  A motion to recommend refusal was proposed by Cllr Fiona Farnell, the ward member for Kirby Misperton, and this was seconded by Cllr Lindsay Burr, the county councillor for Kirby Misperton (both also Ryedale Planning Committee members).  The motion was carried and the Committee’s recommendation will now go to the County Council, which must take the final decision on the fracking application.
