THOUGHT ABOUT PLANNING A VILLAGE/STREET PARTY ON SUNDAY 12th JUNE 2016 – TO HONOUR HM THE QUEEN’S 90^th BIRTHDAY ?

You will recall that thousands of street parties took place for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and that many enjoyed these wonderful Parties.

Next month, Her Majesty The Queen will celebrate a milestone birthday as she turns 90.

As is customary, Her Majesty’s official birthday week-end will take place in June – in around three months’ time – and this year is extra special with a mass street party called The Patron’s Lunch planned on The Mall for some 10,000 guests.    For those of us who are unable to attend the London event, we are being encouraged to get involved and honour the nation’s longest-reigning monarch by holding our own street parties across the country.

Street events and other enjoyable elements can draw out more people from communities who are otherwise less likely to engage – after all, Neighbourhood Watch is all about “By the Community for the Community” so it seems to be the perfect opportunity to have another village/street get-together again !!

As Chair for North Yorkshire Neighbourhood Watch Association, I am encouraging these celebrations across the County in order to encourage neighbourliness and community spirit as NHW is not always about crime – in Marton where I reside, plans are already well advanced for a village party.

National NHW has confirmed to me that as long as the event is being organized by Neighbourhood Watch, then it will be covered by its Public Liability Insurance for up to 1,000 people.

The internet contains much advice and suggestions on how to organise a street party – for example, www.streetparty.org.uk provides a Guide together with a checklist and top tips.

So … how about accepting the challenge and getting started now to organise a Neighbourhood Watch Street/Village Party which will help to bring your neighbours together, so helping to create stronger, more friendly and more active communities where crime and anti-social behaviour are less likely to happen ?

If you hold an event, do please provide us with some feedback and photographs that can be shared with National Neighbourhood Watch – and please remember that National Neighbourhood Watch Week is taking place between 18th-26th June, so your village/street party event could be linked to that !

Annual Parish Meeting: 25^th April 2016

On Tuesday 15 March Ryedale District Council’s Planning Committee will consider an application from Third Energy UK Gas Ltd to start fracking at Kirby Misperton.  Although the final decision rests with North Yorkshire County Council, the recommendations of Ryedale will be a crucial factor.

The Planning Committee will need to consider the impact of fracking on tourism and the local economy (Flamingo Land is of course in Kirby Misperton, for example), the effect on the countryside around Kirby Misperton, and whether the increased traffic by HGVs will cause problems for local residents, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians in the lanes around the village.  Air and water pollution, noise and vibration, as well as 24-hour lighting at the site are all issues that will need to be assessed.  The fact that the full Ryedale Council has already passed a motion calling for a 5-year moratorium on fracking may be expected to have some influence on the Planning Committee’s decision.

The meeting starts at 6pm at Ryedale House, Malton and is open to the public.  Parking is available on site.

Starting from Monday 14 March 2016 the weekday collection time from the post box (at the village shop in Slingsby) will be 5.30 pm (rather than 6 pm as before).

The Saturday collection time remains 10 am.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday – 7.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Wednesday – 8.15 a.m. to 12 noon.

Saturday – 7.30 a.m. to 12 noon.
