Malton Museum 2023 Exhibition

The coming 2023 season will be an extra exciting one for Malton Museum, as we are kicking off the year with a very special guest…

During the month of April, Malton Museum will have on show the Iron Age Shield discovered in Pocklington in 2017.   Its excavation, discovery and restoration was led by Malton-based MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd.

This beautiful shield was found beside a Celtic warrior who had been buried with his chariot and two horses.  It is one of the most significant archaeological finds in recent history and has been described by Melanie Giles of Manchester University as ‘the most important British Celtic art object of the millennium.’ see

Malton Museum is indeed fortunate to be entrusted with this artefact.  There will be more information on the museum’s website in the run up to the opening of the exhibition, see https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/

There will be an opportunity to preview the Shield on Friday 31st March at 6:30 p.m. at Malton Museum, followed by a lecture on the discovery of the Chariot Burial by Paula Ware of Malton Archaeological Practice Ltd at St Michael’s Church, Market Square, Malton at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for this special event cost £10 per adult (including viewing the Shield, glass of wine, followed by the lecture) and are available on the Malton Museum website https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/

The new season will also see the start of our latest Historic Town Tours Programme.  Two public tours are available for booking now.  Use this link to find out more https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/town-tours/
